I am 52. Recently at night I get so hot and sweaty that I have to change my nightgown 2-3 times. Is this hot flashes?

Hot flashes is the result of dropping estrogen levels that alter your brain chemistry and triggers your body's thermostat. There is a small gland located in the center of your brain, which sometimes incorrectly senses that you are cold and sends messages to blood vessels in your skin to make you warm. But, since you weren't really cold, your body reopens the blood vessels to cool itself down. The result is the rush of blood to your upper body and face and sweat.

Night sweats, irritability, loss of sleep, forgetfulness, mood swings, and what some women characterize as the blues is due to the low level of estrogen itself.

TREATMENT
- Vitamin E (400 units) taken twice a day can cut the frequency of hot flashes for some women.
- Estrogen Replacement Therapy (ERT), is considered the most effective treatment against hot flashes.

Herb & Food Therapy
- Alfalfa is a cooling herb that detoxifies and helps damp conditions. Alfalfa contains the phytoestrogens daidzein and genistein, which ease menopausal distress.
- Aloe Vera juice is a balancing beverage  for summer heat and treats premenstrual pain and menopausal heat. It is also good for women who have had hysterectomies.
- Citrus fruits are an effective cooling agent to treat a menopausal hot flash.
- Green tea is also considered good for cooling. (avoid coffee & black tea)
- Summer Squash are excellent for a person with too much heat.
