Running On
Empty
Not getting enough sleep?
Sleep deprivation can reduce alertness, thus putting us at greater risk
for errors and accidents.
Here are
some tips for fighting fatigue and sleep deprivation.
* A good
diet will help you stay energized.
Get rid of low-nutrition foods - laden with fat and sugar and
over-cooked. They use your valuable energy to digest and they give you
little food energy in return. When you are tired or busy, it is tempting
to live on fast food. It is worth making the effort to replace
non-nutritious foods with fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat
protein foods such as beans.
* Make
water your beverage of choice.
Dehydration can make you tired, so you need to drink plenty of
water every day. Try filling a water glass in the morning and continuing
to sip and refill it throughout the day.
* Get
moving.
Regular exercise will improve your circulation which in turn will
help keep your body tissue supplied with oxygen. If your job requires you
to sit or stand in one place, use your breaks and free time to stretch and
move around.
* While
resting is important, it is not the only way to fight fatigue.
Instead of slumping in front of the television after work, get up
and do something; you may be surprised how quickly you revive.
* Get
enough sleep.
Most adults need an average of seven or eight hours of
uninterrupted sleep to maintain health and remain alert. Use a fan or air
conditioner to keep your sleeping area cool and to mask disturbing sounds
from the outdoors.
*
Practice good mental health.
Look on the positive side of things rather than the negative.
Tackle the problems you can do something about; try not to worry about the
rest.
* Set
priorities.
You can't do everything, so concentrate on the most important
responsibilities and interests in your life.
