Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are varicose veins in the lining of the rectum. Rectal bleeding and pain during bowel movements are the most common symptoms of hemorrhoids. They are very common, especially during and immediately after pregnancy. Lack of exercise and insufficient fiber in your diet can also lead to hemorrhoids.
There are both external and internal herbal treatments for the relief of hemorrhoids. Externally, a soothing and healing ointment of witch hazel is commercially available. Internally, bulk-forming laxatives such as psyllium and flaxseed absorb water in the stool and thereby soften it. An excellent internal combination is composed of equal parts of:
Herbs that are helpful: Dandelion, Yellow dock, Horse chestnut. Make a decoction by boiling the dandelion and yellow dock roots in 11/2 pints of water for 10 minutes. Reduce to 1 pint. Add the aboveground parts of horse chestnut, cover, and steep for an additional 10 minutes. Use 1 ounce of the total combined herbs, and drink up to 3 cups daily. Note that pregnant or nursing women should not use this internal remedy.
