Do you know what your children are watching?
I received a long letter from a
concerned parent about Pokemon ( children's animation program) and its effect on
their three children ages 7, 9, and 11.
He was very upset with the trading card obsession. The fact that kids are beginning
to steal the cards, or lower the younger ones to trade without wanting. The
violence and the fight that takes place in the program.
He was talking about restricting his children to watch the program
anymore.
Then a week ago I was talking to another parent which was talking about the same program and that her children are learning between good and bad and to fight the bad against good. I asked about the trading cards, she added it is no difference between this and the traditional baseball cards.
Do you know what your
children are watching?
The truth of the matter is that yes there is violence among TV programs.
And the real issue falls into your hands as a parent, to monitor what is
best for your child according to the family values and standards.
You need to see if the child is ready for whatever program is there. The age
readiness and personality differences.
When I was in college studying
psychology, one of my research papers was about the influence of TV on
children.
The result of many studies shown:
- The influence of the same content program was different on different
personalities.
- The educational and soft programs had a great positive reinforcement on all
children.
- The violent programs showed an increase interest in boys to be more
aggressive. However, the majority of the girls did not show any interest in
those programs.
- The overall result showed the kids with parents who talked to them and showed
them the positive and negative side of the program could manage their behavior
better than those with no supervision.
This shows that children need direction in their life. It is hard to separate the kids from the society, but is best to communicate with kids all the time, that they see a friend in you. And best of all is reinforce the good values of your family and the society.
The good values keep you and children safe and winners of the future.
